WIEN, Austria - Although digitalisation is all around us already and the pace of change seems to speed up continuously there are still moments of surprise. And this is what happened to the international audience at this years UNIDO Bridge for Cities conference in Vienna. Mobile phones went up when people tried to catch the magic moment when AI met human beings on stage.

Shape of you

Although evoking scenes from the Terminator movies and the rise of the machines this time it was not the he-man like shape of Arnold Schwarzenegger. Instead Sophia the humanoid robot with female features engaged in a public conversation with UNIDO Director General LI Yong: “Sophia, you said that your goal is to use your AI to improve human lives. Can you share with us what role you could play in the creation of smart cities?” The stunning audience in Boardroom D of Vienna International Center witnessed a smooth conversation.

Developed by Hong Kong based corporation Hanson Robotics her creators claim that Sophia’s ‚AI combines cutting-edge work in symbolic AI, neural networks, expert systems, machine perception, conversational natural language processing, adaptive motor control and cognitive architecture among others‘. The techniques and AI components applied in this machine provide her with the capacity of unique responses to interactions in a social context. The integration and networked activities of these AI technologies are facilitated using a protocol named by its creators at Hanson the Synthetic Organism Unifying Language (SOUL).

In 2017 Sophia became the world’s first robot granted a citizenship by a sovereign country. However unlike the sinocentric vision of Blade Runner Sophias home country is Saudi Arabia.
